GARY PETERSEN'S Working with geometry and color, Gary Petersen brings a personal and idiosyncratic touch to hard edge painting and addresses issues of uncertainty, imbalance, and playfulness. Unlike most geometric painting, which is preliminarily sketched out and planned, Petersen works intuitively, with one decision determining the next. His wide-ranging references include architecture, cartoons, advertisements, and graphic design as well as the rich history of geometric art, most notably Al Held and Nicholas Krushenick. Petersen has exhibited widely in New York City and throughout the United States. Awards include the MacDowell Colony Fellowship, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Award, New Jersey State Council on the Arts Painting Fellowship, the Sharpe-Walentas Space Program, and the Edward F. Albee Fellowship. His work is in several private and public collections including the Dallas Museum of Art and the US State Department. He is represented by McKenzie Fine Art Gallery in New York.
